About
Born in Bristol in 1976, I am a contemporary British landscape painter whose work is informed by a diverse creative and technical background. After receiving a BA Honours in Fine Art from Plymouth University, I spent time teaching in Andalucia, where I developed a keen eye for light and form. Following my return to the UK, I retrained as a carpenter, merging a technical understanding of structure and materials with my artistic practice to create distinctive landscapes. Since 2003, I have been based in West Cornwall. The unique Cornish landscape has provided the inspiration for my work.
I am an intuitive painter. My process is less about direct representation and more about capturing the raw feeling and "sense of place" of a location. Six years ago, I built a painting studio attached to my house, allowing me to immerse myself in the work at any time, day or night. While I enjoy the spontaneity of en plein air, studio work is my main practice, enabling me to work on multiple pieces simultaneously, allowing paintings to inform and inspire one another.
Recently, I have been focusing on freer mark-making, enjoying the exploration of colour relationships and allowing the paint to be more expressive. My style adapts to the subject and atmosphere, transitioning between delicate washes and thick, impasto textures. My background in carpentry is often reflected in my love for working on rigid panels and a tendency to layer work over long periods. Paintings sometimes remain in the studio for years, constantly being reworked, added to, and subtracted from, building up a history and memory that I hope echoes the enduring nature of the landscape itself.
Currently, I am working on a series of boat paintings, drawing inspiration from local harbours like Falmouth, Newlyn, Portreath, and Cadgwith. These works are taking me in an exciting new direction. I am presently building a new, larger green oak and larch studio, which will provide space to expand my practice to a larger scale and act as a dedicated space to showcase my work. My paintings are represented by a local gallery and have found homes with collectors worldwide.
I hope you enjoy looking through my work.
